Sustainable Style: Veja Esplars…

During lockdown, I treated myself to these trainers using the money I’d saved having not visited London’s coffee-shops for a couple of months. I recently started taking an interest in sustainable clothing brands; as soon as I became aware of Veja I started seeing them everywhere in London.

They’re a huge brand, but just in case you’re new to Veja, go check out their site and in particular this section that talks about their history and what the brand is all about. In terms of demonstrating responsibility and transparency it’s a really impressive model. I also like that they admit they’re still not perfect and are continuously improving. The trainers aren’t the cheapest but still priced fairly considering their costs of production are higher than other brands due to their ethical sourcing and manufacturing processes.

In terms of their trainers, there’s a wide variety of styles so you’ll probably something to your taste. They’ve been making this Esplar design since 2011; these are a replacement for my Adidas Stan Smiths that are similar. For most of my life I was never really a fan of wearing trainers, but a few years ago I bought my first pair of white minimal trainers and now I wear them all the time. They’re great with almost anything…shorts, jeans, chinos, I even wear them with more formal trousers when I want to look like I’ve made an effort but take the edge of the formality of my outfit.

During their first few weeks of wear the Veja’s are living up to my expectations. I’m hoping that they last me a good number of years; I’m making a conscious effort right now to try and spend more on clothes that will last me a lot longer and hence have a lower environmental impact.

I’m still a work in progress when it comes to acting in a sustainable way, but I’m committed to continually improve. I feel like I’m part of a generation that’s driven globalisation and consumerism to the max and that now we need to step up and try to help fix the problems we created, starting in this case from the ground up…

  1. Thank you for introducing me to Veja’s. I am also changing the way I live to a more sustainable one, particularly the way I eat and also in the clothes I buy, but only as and when I need to replace. I look forward to more of your ‘sustainable’ journey posts 🙂
